Supercomputers and big data: coming down from the ivory tower to provide cutting-edge science for the energy sector

13-01-2020

You are all invited to take part in a talk with Dr. Albert Soret, coordinator of the Earth System Services Group of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). The event will take place on 21st January, at 2pmat the Library Auditorium of NOVA School of Science and Technology.

Climate predictions, energy services and air pollution have witnessed considerable improvements in the last decade. However, new challenges regarding data have come to light. For example,   information is often un-tailored, which requires interdisciplinary teams developing robust methodologies and tools to address decision-making needs. Super computers, machine learning, stakeholder’s engagement and other techniques are necessary to deal with uncertainty and complexity of sustainability issues.

Dr. Albert Soret (https://www.bsc.es/soret-albert) works with climate data in the fields of solar and wind energy services, agriculture and water management services, urban air quality modelling and insurance services. He is the principal investigator of several projects, including:

§ INDECIS: Integrated approach for the development across Europe of user oriented climate indicators for GFCS high-priority sectors: agriculture, disaster risk reduction, energy, health, water and tourism.

§  S2S4E: Sub-seasonal to Seasonal climate forecasting for Energy.

§  MANTEL: Management of Climatic Extreme Events in Lakes & Reservoirs for the Protection of Ecosystem Services

The 20 minutes talk will be followed by a discussion where you are free to share your work in the field in order to establish possible future collaborations.
